Vir Das is embracing what makes him different.
PEOPLE can exclusively reveal the cover of the actor and comedian’s debut book, The Outsider: A Memoir for Misfits. The deeply personal memoir will hit shelves this fall via Simon & Schuster.
"My story may mean something to you," Das, 45, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "I’m an Indian who has gone from farms in Nigeria to ex-British military academies."
He continues to detail his extensive life journey, saying, "Bustling Delhi public school to desolate rural Illinois drama school. Busking on the Harvard campus, dishwashing in Chicago, to highway cycling in Alabama. Hindi movies to American comedy, background dancing to Carnegie Hall. From working in news channels to being called a terrorist on one."
Das continues, "Six heartbreaks, four world tours, 14 police complaints, one clueless idiot. For some reason, I’ve seen more of this world than anyone I’ve ever met."
"This book takes you stumbling across that world with me," he teases of the upcoming release. "Truly lost, aimlessly adrift, looking to belong. And maybe that’s your story too because you, too, are an outsider."
Per a synopsis, the book dives deep into Das' life and the challenges he has overcome. From experiences in Mexico, India, the United States and more, the comedian has learned to "lean way into his place as an outsider, and to find humor and meaning on the fringes."
"The Outsider is more than just a memoir about Vir’s rise to comedic fame; it’s a powerful reflection on how being a misfit can shape one’s identity into something truly unique," the description states. "Vir’s story speaks to anyone who has ever felt out of place, serving as a testament to the resilience and humor that can arise when you resist the urge to fit in and stay true to who you are."
Das has established a name for himself all over the globe. On the small screen, he has starred in ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier and an episode of the hit series Fresh Off the Boat. Additionally, he co-wrote and starred in the Netflix series Hasmokh and made an appearance in the all-star comedy movie The Bubble.
The actor also hosted the travel show Jestination Unknown on Prime Video, which saw him traveling through India with a few special guests. He won an International Emmy Award for his Netflix stand-up special Vir Das: For India.
Das came under fire in 2021 when he made a comment about the treatment of women in India while performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C, per Associated Press. "I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them at night," he said towards the end of the performance.
In response, he faced police complaints from multiple international political groups. The state spokesperson for the Hindu nationalist party even called for his arrest, according to the news agency.
Das later opened up to the outlet about the backlash. "I felt like I let down my country and I'll only ever assign blame to myself. In that moment, you're not angry — you're ridden with guilt," he said. "And whether that's deserved or undeserved guilt, only retrospect will tell. But at that moment, you just like, man, I feel sad. I think I let people down. I was always taught to take my feedback, you know, mouth shut, head down. And I respect artists who do."
Das is currently embarking on his Mind Fool world tour – which sees him bringing his comedy to 33 countries.
The Outsider: A Memoir for Misfits is out November 4, 2025, and is currently available for preorder.
